You are probably here because you have noticed an odd referral in either Google analytics or another analytics platform, and are wondering who the heck Semalt is.

Who is Semalt?

It looks like Semalt offers services regarding search or improving Google rankings, but their tactics are a little fishy. Upon visiting Semalt’s website I see a couple items that raise a flag. The first being you have to login or create an account before you can see what they are about. The second is their social buttons require you to login with your social media profile… ummm no thanks.

Why did I get a referral Semalt?

It looks like they are using a bot to send referrals to sites across the web. This is in hopes
you will visit their site and possibly sign up for their SEO services(or whatever they are offering).

How do I block referrals from Semalt?

To block referrals from Semalt, you will need to add the following to your .htaccess file

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^https?://([^.]+\.)*semalt\.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* - [F]
</IfModule>

This should take care of the referrals from Semalt and any sub-domain they may be sending referrals from.
